Rooted in Scripture

Rooted In Scripture

Epistemology is the philosophical study of thought: how do you know what you know? Do you actually know what you think you know? This subject, if contemplated long enough, will begin to unravel many preconceptions and reveal them to be misconceptions. All of us from these misconceptions formulate a worldview in our minds, and to the degree we allow these misconceptions to grow the more we won’t be able to truly see the world as it really is. It’s the mission of the Seminary Student to break down the walls of lies that we all (for greater or for lesser) have constructed and build it upon the firm bedrock of scripture.

At the heart of the Seminary Student is it’s mission Statement: Rooted in Scripture, Growing in Grace.

The Apostle Paul writes, “All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. That the man of God may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (2 Tim 3:16). Below are three observations from this text.

The Author of Scripture

First, scripture is breathed out by God. Take a look around your room right now, all things that you have, every atom that consists in it’s makeup, is a created object. Your bed, your television, your ceiling, and the particles in the air that are swirling around that are of dust and dead skin cells, all created. Now look down at your hands as they type, feel the sensations as you press them down upon your keyboard. Take a deep breath in and out, feel your heartbeat. This is an earthshattering reality, that God created all of this from His infinite wisdom. The God who made all things breathed out His Word that we may know Him more, isn’t that wonderful?

His Purpose for Scripture

Second, the scriptures have a distinct purpose in our lives. When we look at the television set and watch the next episode, when we play another hour of a video game, there is no real lasting purpose in it’s activity. But the person who studies the scriptures, the one who sits at the Master’s feet and listens to what He says, grows.

  • It teaches us about God and His desire for how we ought to live.
  • It lovingly rebukes us in the ways that we are not following His way.
  • It corrects our thinking so that we may change and grow to be more like him. .

The Result of Scripture

Finally, the scriptures make us complete. When we chase after the things of the world that promise us the happiness and fulfillment we seek, we actually find that these things never provide us the satisfaction it promises us. When we see the world crashing around us with tsunamis and earthquakes, tornadoes and cancer, it crushes us. But Scripture teaches us their purpose.

So here we are. We end where we began: how do you know what you know? What do you think you know that can possibly be wrong? Well that’s why this site is here. The Seminary Student is a journey through seminary, to learn more about Scripture, to know more about God, to love our neighbors more fully. My prayer is that you and I grow together in learning about God and His Kingdom for His glory.
